Ranking the top quarterback prospects
While I’m still standing by my decision not to do a mock draft, I couldn’t resist but do a ranking of the top three projected quarterbacks in this year’s draft. No one really knows the order they’ll go in, and that’s what’s going to determine a lot about how things end up playing out.
1. Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt- While he doesn’t have Matt Leinhart’s credentials or Vince Young’s playmaking ability, he is a very, very talented player. Even at Vanderbilt where he was taking a beating week in and week out he was able to do a lot of stuff. His downside is that he isn’t as accomplished as the others, very small in comparison to his upside, and that is his toughness, his attitude, and his athletic ability (particularly arm strength).
2. Matt Leinhart, USC- Matt is probably the safest pick in the draft, because everyone knows he’s probably going to be decent, and maybe even good. He doesn’t have the bust potential that Vince Young has, which is going to make him a safer and probably more intelligent pick. He doesn’t have much arm strength which everyone keeps downplaying, but they’re also uplaying Cutler’s armstrength for a reason- it lets you do a lot more with the offense. If you’re quarterback is going to be struggling with throwing the deep out and running plays accross the field, then you’re going to have a choked offense that just won’t be as good as it could be, and the players are going to get frustrated.
3. Vince Young, Texas is the most talented of the three, and has a huge potential if he comes out good, but he could very easily be a massive bust as well. It’s going to come down to whether teams are willing to take the risk, and just how badly they want the massive ticket sales he’s going to bring.
