NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Rex Grossman down, Brett Favre up, and other dislocations

by James on September 26th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Rex struggles

Rex GrossmanYou have to admit that sometimes the best part of the NFL season is all the surprises that take place.

Your intrepid author could not even begin to guess at some of this stuff.

It appears that the Chicago Bears are going to replace Rex Grossman with Brian Griese.

OK, that one could be guessed, even though the Squibster is a supporter of Rex Grossman, based on the fact that Rex has started very few games in his career. Oh, he will never be Peyton Manning, but Rex can be effective.

The Bears were hoping Grossman would play the way he did the first five weeks last season and ditch the inconsistency he showed the rest of the way.

Well, he is more consistent.

The problem is “Bad Rex” keeps lining up behind center, and that’s bad news for the Bears.

Well, about time you say. Stop. Think about it. Will Brian Griese take the Bears to the Super Bowl?

Now before you say, well neither will Rex, keep in mind, he already did that last year. The Bears continue to be a body without a head.

The incomparable one

Brett FavreJust up the road, a long ways up the road in the frozen north is a team that in recent years has been a head without a body. That would be Brett Favre and the defenseless, punchless Packers. That, my friends, has changed. The Packers can bring the D and bring it aggressively.

The Packers just passed a huge final exam by taking down the Chargers at home. Something your intrepid author did not think they would pull off.

Your gallivanting author has a theory that a lot of Brett’s passes into double coverage had a lot to do with there being no Packer defense to help him out. Brett felt compelled to do it all, to carry the team. Now with the D doing their job, Brett IS doing it all.

Completed 28 of 45 passes for 369 yards and three touchdowns in the Packers’ 31–24 victory over San Diego. Favre’s third touchdown tied Dan Marino’s record of 420 career passing touchdowns, the most in NFL history. source

What about the Steelers?

The Steelers have found themselves again and it was not Big Ben after all. It turns out the Pittsburgh Steelers have an awesome defense. The Steelers are back.

The Steelers manhandled the 49ers on Sunday, dominating the line of scrimmage and proving that Pittsburgh is truly one of the best teams in the league this season. With the 37-16 win, Pittsburgh has now outscored opponents 97-26 this season. The D was suffocating again, confusing Alex Smith and holding Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore to only 39 yards on 14 carries. The offense and the special teams are playing superb as well. Wave those Terrible Towels, folks. The Steelers are alive and well. source

Drew Brees is feeling kind of low

The Saints, on the other hand, are hurting. Last year was a perfect storm of events that carried the Saints fueled by the emotion of Katrina, to the conference finals. This year it is almost the opposite, as poor defense and an injured Deuce are putting the Saints back to Aints status.

The offense was a mess, the defense even worse and the overall performance downright embarrassing. Drew Brees turned the ball over five times, the rushing attack managed just 34 yards and the questionable Titans passing attack had no problem gashing the Saints. At 0-3, it’s tempting to write off New Orleans this year.

The Duece McAllister injury to the ACL is bad for New Orleans, but maybe good for the Squibster. While it is not a good thing for Deuce to be injured and would never wish that on anyone, it does mean more carries for Reggie Bush. Reggie, you see, is on my Fantasy Football Team.

So what did you learn today?

Sexy Rexy is not.

Brett is rejuvenated.

The Steelers got their curtain back.

The Saints are rarely any good.
