NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Rex Grossman is good, no really, he is

by James on September 9th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

What? You…, you don’t believe in me? You’ll see, just wait

Rex Grossman (Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images)Such is my lot in life.

First and foremost to be a devout Lions fan.

As if this is not enough, somewhere in the heavens or most likely in the great depths, it is decided that your intrepid author will be the great Rex Grossman apologist. Some of you think it is more like Poltergeist, declaring Rex all but dead at times.

Time out for the Squibster to gloat: My Spartys are 2 - 0 and UM lost again, this time to a bunch of Ducks.

Then to just make matters worse the Bears have to pick the Chargers to open up against this Sunday. There is just no way Rex has a big game against the Chargers.

Then your gallivanting author will hear it. “Are you insane?” they will say. “Have you lost your marbles?” they will remark.

Brazen prediction

Behold, there is another voice in the darkness and it is Adam Schein of Fox Sports. He too believes in Rex.

Book it — Rex Grossman is going to have a much more even season, throwing for 25 or more touchdowns, while leading the Bears back to the playoffs. source

Hey, that was Adam Schein of Fox Sports not me. Give me a break. 25 touchdowns?

Hard work pays off

Well, Rex did get some excellent tutelage this summer and worked really hard.

And a huge key for Grossman this offseason was the work put in with new quarterback coach Pep Hamilton.

“He’s pushed me,” Grossman said. “He has pushed me to work as hard as I have. We have drilled all off-season. We have drilled on my footwork. We have drilled on keeping two hands on the ball. We have drilled on stepping up in the pocket. We have worked on creating a pocket. He will rush me during a one-on-one drill and I’ll have to move to the right, then left, then step up. And we do it over and over again. The repetition is key, so all of my fundamentals are like muscle memory and that’s the only way I know how to do it.

But 25 touchdowns? Come on.

You gotta believe

And the players believe in him. That is important.

And don’t just take my word for it on what lies ahead. Grossman’s go-to receiver down the field is Bernard Berrian. The deep threat told us on Wednesday, “Everyone in this locker room believes in Rex. He is the No. 1 quarterback. There is no quarterback issue on this team. Rex is our starter. Brian (Griese) is our backup. Rex has had a fantastic off-season and preseason. We are in a great flow. Mark Bradley is healthy. Muhsin Muhammad is a great player. Greg Olsen looks like a veteran receiver, not a rookie tight end, making one-handed catches. You just watch what happens this year.”

But 25 touchdowns is a lot of touchdowns.

How about if Rex just gets a little more consistent and the Bears win a lot of games again?

Then will you believe a little in Rex Grossman?

A teeny tiny little?

Geez, nobody said Rex Grossman was Peyton Manning or Tom Brady or anything. Give the guy a break, will ya?
