Roy Williams dominates as Detroit beats Buffalo
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Roy, #11, hands ball to boy, #11
The Detroit Lions played like champions. Well, at least for the first 2 and 1/2 quarters, then Buffalo started to catch on and stormed back to make it a very close game.
Roy Williams was absolutely unstoppable. Buffalo could not figure out how to slow him down. He had 161 yards on 10 catches with one beautiful touchdown catch in the corner of the end zone. Practically every catch was followed with his characteristic 1st down sign he makes with his right hand stabbing forward and up.
At one point, late in the game Kitna under threw Williams at the 2 yard line or he has another touchdown and probably goes over 200 yards. He also threw a bomb that Roy just missed grabbing over his shoulder early in the game.
NFL Football Mike Williams factoid Mike, the other Williams, was declared inactive for the game. Devale Ellis was made active. He did not catch a ball, although, your intrepid author only remembers one ball thrown his way, a sideline pass and it was batted out of Devale’s hands.
How did Detroit do it? Offensive coordinator Mike Martz seemed to mix passes to Roy with a lot of runs and short passes to Kevin Jones. This had the tendency to keep the linebackers up close to the line of scrimmage, leaving Williams with single coverage for the first 10 yards and with his height and strength it was a complete mismatch.
So even though Detroit had a makeshift offensive line of backups, and guys changing positions to make up for 3 injured starters, they kept the Buffalo defense back on their heels. Maybe they established something here, who knows.
NFL Football Fan Question Marinelli has kept the Lions confident in the process of becoming winners. Just how far will the confidence make up for the lack of talent?
