NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Roy Williams has a tip for you - Brett Favre can’t run

by James on October 6th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Tip the Pizza boy? No Way!

Roy WilliamsWhat a very different season of NFL Football is on top of us this year.

The surprises are everywhere to be had or to be bad.

Patriots are great, no surprise.
Colts are great, no surprise.

So where are the surprises?

San Diego

The bad?

Well, try Norv Turner and the Chargers. The new coach is struggling to put it all together and LT is not getting his carries and not getting many touchdowns.

But the season is long and even though many of us have our doubts about Norv Turner, the coach could turn it around and in fact, they seem to be heading towards an easier stretch in their schedule.

New Orleans

Also the bad?

How about Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints? They lost the Deuce and now we remember how valuable Deuce McAllister is to the power running game. Throw in some tougher competition and the fact that every one sees them coming and it makes for a very tough year.

Just to kick the Saints when they are down, the rest of their division has improved over last year. Well, maybe not the Vickless Falcons, but Tampa Bay and Carolina with the starting Carr have gotten off to better starts.

Tampa Bay

The Bucs are getting some great play out of current Fantasy Football defensive leader Barrett Ruud.

In case you hadn’t noticed, this defense looks an awful lot like the one the Buccaneers rode to the Super Bowl in 2002. Third-year middle linebacker Barrett Ruud has earned a spot in the starting lineup and looks like a perfect fit for coordinator Monte Kiffin, new addition Cato June is playing well and Derrick Brooks is somehow continuing to look strong and fast at age 34. source

Green Bay

Speaking of good defense leading a team, how about them Packers? Their young aggressive defense had put a little zing back into Brett Favre and we all know that can be dangerous.

They beat the Bears on Sunday. It might seem crazy to make such a declaration so early in the season, but the Packers have had such a good start — and the Bears have had such a bad start — that a Packers win Sunday would practically knock Chicago out of NFC North contention and make the Packers look nearly unbeatable in the division.

The big issue for the Pack will be getting the run going.

The Packers rank last in the league in yards per carry, yards per game and rushing first downs. If opponents make the nickel their base package and the Packers can’t take advantage of it by pounding the rock, eventually the offense is going to slow down.

Detroit Lions

On the other side of the coin the Lions are living off of offense with Jon Kitna throwing balls all over the place and receivers like Roy Williams and Shaun McDonald raking them in. Kitna is first is passing yards and Roy is third in receiving yards with 1227 and 388 respectively.

Of course, the Lions have issues and those would be on defense.

But when the defense as a whole has looked good, it’s mostly because the opposing quarterbacks — Oakland’s Josh McCown, Minnesota’s Tarvaris Jackson and Chicago’s Brian Griese — have looked bad. And when the defense has looked bad — against Philadelphia’s Donovan McNabb — it has looked really, really bad. Marinelli had a good reputation as a defensive assistant in Tampa Bay, but after 20 games as head coach of the Lions, he still has a long way to go in assembling a similar defense in Detroit.

Now if Roy can start tipping the pizza boy and Favre can hand off for 1st downs, we may see some real surprises!

NFL Football Fan Question Can you nominate any other surprise teams?
