NFL Football - St. Louis Rams outscore Detroit Lions in Martz bowl
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Mike Martz has the offense clicking
It was labeled the Martz bowl and it lived up to its billing. Footballs were flying all over the place. It was the kind of game where no lead was safe and you just did not want it to end. The teams marched, no, flew up and down the field with long passes to receivers and short passes to backs out of the backfield. In this day and age of the great defenses, it was a thing of beauty.

The Detroit Lions in a valiant effort fell short at St. Louis 41 to 34. The offense was humming for both teams, while the defenses were pretty much just watching.
The stars of the game? For St. Louis, Mark Bulger with 321 yards passing and 3 touchdown passes. Tory Holt, 6 receptions, 102 yards 1 td. Isaac Bruce, 7 receptions, 100 yards, 1 td. Stephen Jackson had 81 yards rushing and 62 yards in receptions and 1 td.
For Detroit, Jon Kitna with 277 yards passing and two touchdown passes. Roy Williams, in a dominant performance, with 9 receptions for 139 yards and almost constant double coverage. Kevin Jones, showing some moves and power, with 93 yards and 2 tds. Mike Furrey with his best game ever, 8 receptions for 82 yards and 2 tds.
The game was a wild affair with the highest combined score of the year with 75 points scored. It was a game featuring the former head coach of the Rams as the Offensive coordinator of the Lions, Mike Martz and the former head coach of the Saints as the Defensive coordinator of the Rams, Jim Hasslitt.
It was such a wild game that Detroit ended up throwing two balls in the end zone for near tds to end the 4th quarter. The first one had a controversial defensive pass interference call that was waved off, because a St. Louis player had managed to tip the ball a split second before the interference. After the ball is touched there is no offensive interference. Coach Rod Marinelli has to wonder when he will get that first win.
It was a huge game for St. Louis, because Chicago beat Seattle in the late night game, putting St. Louis in a tie for first in the NFC West Division.
NFL Football Fan Question Can St. Louis win the division? Will Detroit ever win?
