Super Bowl Review- The Plays and the Players

by Jesse on February 6th, 2006

I think both teams were a little disappointing in the level of play. Overall, the defense on both teams was quite good, but man, the offenses just plain choked. I think most people expected Roethlisberger to do a lot better than 9/21 with 2 picks and a touchdown run. As the people at FO said which I have a link to in the below post, that was the worst play in history by a Super Bowl winning quarterback.

Still, he made some big plays, so he wasn’t too bad, though I think Hasselbeck was better. And now that I’m on to Hasselback, why did he throw the ball 49 times? Shaun Alexander had 95 yards on 20 carries, which is almost five yards a carry. Not brilliant, but quite good. If they had pounded him more, the Seahawks might have had a better chance.

And what’s with Stevens? Three dropped passes? Nice. Way to back up your words. Same goes for Porter.

The interesting thing about the pass from Randel El to Ward is that no one was fooled. Everyone knew he was going to throw it, but they still easily completed it.

Speaking of which, right before the play I turned to the person next to me and said

“This is exactly when the Steelers are going to want to run a trick play, watch Randel El throw it any play now,” and he did.

Something I can’t figure out is the Pittsburgh running game. It just hasn’t bee there. Parker had 90-something yards rushing, but 75 were on the long play, and on the other 9 runs he averaged 2 yards/carry.

Bettis was alright, but not great.

Isn’t it interesting that a key part of the last two Super Bowls has been the no-huddle offense?

Last year McNabb got tired and they weren’t able to do it (which Terrel Owens so kindly told us, while making sure we knew that he “wasn’t the one that got tired in the Super Bowl”), and this year Seattle botched it in the last couple minutes of each half, which really cost them.

How about Seattle special teams? Zero big plays, and lots of bad ones.

Lastly, just for kicks, here are a couple calls against the Steelers that would have changed the game dramatically-

Hasselbeck being down by contact- Um, no. Just because at some point on the run somebody touches Hasselbeck, that doesn’t make him down by contact. He hadn’t even started to fall when that guy touched him, so I would definitely say that should have been a fumble.

Roethlisberger was blocked in the back on the interception return, which would have set the Seahawks back about forty yards, as it’s ten yards from the spot of the foul, and I think it was around the thirty or forty yard line.

Also, someone, might have been Stevens, caught the ball, took two steps, got absolutely hammered, and fumbled. Steelers recovered, but no, it’s incomplete.
