Super Bowl XL- Why the Steelers will win

by Jesse on February 3rd, 2006

As the game draws closer, it’s time for people to start mailing in their predictions.

The SI writers already have, Gil Brandt has, and Cheeks has, and in his article Brandt mentioned that 4/5 former players who are now in the Hall of Fame all picked the Steelers, with the fifth not picking anyone.

All in all, about 80 percent of the people are picking the Steelers. Yet everyone is talking about how much respect the Seahawks deserve, and how the more they think about it, the more they like the Seahawks.

It almost reminds me of….last year. When the matchup was decided, everyone instantly said the Pats would run away with it. Then as time went on people started thinking the Eagles had a chance. And they did. But the Patriots were the better team, and everyone knew it. So a couple people picked the Eagles, and then we waited.

The problem with people picking the Eagles last year, and the Seahawks this year, is that everyone knew they weren’t as good as the other team. Everyone knows the Steelers are the better team this year, yet people spend their whole day trying to figure out how they can spin things to make the Seahawks look better. Instead of figuring out how to determine which team to raise above the other, they are using all their effort to convince us that they are even equal.

I think much like last year the team that was first favoured to win will win, though I don’t think it will be as close as last year.

People are talking constantly about two things:

  1. The Steelers can get beaten deep- Yes and no. Yes, normally they are vulnerable, but look at what they have done in the playoffs. They shut down Cincy, Indy, and Denver in consecutive weeks. Ike Taylor has succesfully shut down Chad Johnson, Marvin Harrison, and Rod Smith three weeks in a row. In case you’re counting, those are three Pro Bowl recievers.
  2. Shaun Alexander is amazing, he ran for 1800 yards, and almost thirty touchdowns- Yes he did. But people seem to forget that the Steelers have one of the best rush defenses in the NFL. They simply never give up 100 yard rushing games. They did against the Colts, but that was because they trailed the whole game, so the Colts were able to pound James. Look it up, no one rushes for 100 yards against the Steelers, so I don’t see why Shaun Alexander will be able to, as I don’t think he’ll be the best rusher they’ve faced all year.

Another thing to consider is the Steelers rushing game- It’s pretty darn good. And Seattle’s defensive line is overrated. And the Steelers offensive line is underrated. Simmons, Smith, Faneca, Hartings: They can all get it done. And with the game on artificial turf, I can see Willie Parker having a huge game.

But maybe that’s just me. We’ll have to see. This the NFL Championship, and anything can happen. Except it won’t.

Steelers 34
Seahawks 20
