NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

The Draft as my Crystal Ball

by on May 1st, 2006

Jesse has done a stellar job going point by point on the teams and the draft. Let me highlight a few insights I have taken from the draft and you can let me know if you agree or not… maybe even insights you have taken.

Vince Young in Tennessee
The choice of Vince Young over Matt LEinart is an interesting one to me. To me, this says that Steve McNair will be back in Tennessee this year. McNair took and almost big brother approach to Young this past year and has worked a lot with him. If Tennessee wanted the best, they would have taken Leinart. Passing on LEinart to take the man that has been a pet project of McNair tells me alot about the Titan’s outlook on the future.

Baltimore Trades Picks with Cleveland, Drafts Ngata
A big fat WHAT??? I’m not sure how the Ravens benefitted from this trade. It was not made until a minute left on the clock for Cleveland and the trade meant Cleveland, a conference rival, essentially had a half hour to make their first round choice and the Ravens didn’t really get anything they wouldn’t have gotten anyway. Cleveland was not going to draft Haloti Ngata as they have bigger holes to plug elsewhere.

Baltimore waits until the 5th Round to draft a Safety
The biggest hole on the team’s roster is Will Demps’ Safety position. Okay, so the birds couldn’t take Michael Huff, but at the 12th pick overall, Jason Allen from Miami was still available. They drafted Haloti Ngata first… Okay I’ll live with that. But waited until the fifth round to draft a Safety, choosing instead to pick up an RB, WR and CB first.
