NFL Football Revealed on Squib Kick

Tony Romo is a go with the TO

by James on September 29th, 2007

NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.

Tony Romo surpasses all of our expectations with his passes to TO

Tony RomoDallas was faced with a very difficult decision last year.

Do you go with the veteran quarterback in Drew Bledsoe, even though he was struggling (and when in his career wasn’t he) or do you bench him and go with Tony Romo.

This was no easy decision.

With my hindsight Monday morning quarterback eyeglasses on, the decision is easy. Go with Romo.

Last year, you were not wearing your special lenses and your crystal ball was foggy.

Drew had been there done that and was going to get you so far. Tony did not have the experience, but might, just might, have a higher ceiling to work with.

It was a huge risk for the Cowboys, because the fragile psyche of a quarterback could be destroyed. If Tony failed, then Drew may not be able to come back and play as well.

Fortunately, for Cowboy fans everywhere, the choice was Tony Romo.

Unfortunately, for Cowboy fans everywhere, Tony muffed a snap for an easy field goal and it cost the Cowboys the game against Seattle in last year’s playoffs.

Now the psyche of the fans was affected everywhere. You, me, and everyone else doubted if Tony could be big time. It seemed that Tony just got on a roll at the end of last season and now it was over.

What, were we blind?

Tony is on fire right now. Maybe Tom Brady with his cast of 15 future hall of fame receivers, including the reincarnation of Randy Moss, is better. Maybe not.

TO support

Terrell Owens would say Not!

A huge reason why Romo and the Cowboys offense have been so successful is the incredible rapport between the quarterback and Terrell Owens.

Romo has supported T.O. since the day he arrived in Dallas, even while serving as the back-up to Drew Bledsoe, and the quarterback seems to “get” Owens.

“He’s a guy who wants nothing more than to win deep down inside,” Romo said. “He wants to be a great player. He wants to be successful and he knows that I want him to be successful. There is never a personal issue or vendetta with us. I know he wants the ball. He knows I want to get him the ball. If he’s open, he gets it. If someone else is open, they get it. He understands that with me.

“He’s a big guy who can do what a 180-pound guy can do. But he’s 225 pounds. It’s part of what makes him special. And the other part you guys don’t see. He is so committed during the week in practice. He wears this vest to put more weight on himself. He is out there running and working.” source

So, how big of a roll is Tony on? He has a 111.9 QB rating, which is better known as excellent.

Dark Clouds are gathering

Are there any clouds on the horizon? Well, this is the Cowboys, after all, and they are always entertaining.

You know how it is these days. You do well and you ask for more dough. Tony is up for contract after this year and the Cowboys are threatening to slap the franchise tag on Tony if he goes for more than 30 mill. Not bad for a player that was undrafted.

But this strategy presumes that Romo will sign the one-year deal and report. If he chooses not to sign the tender and stay away from training camp, the preseason, and up to ten weeks of the regular season, the Cowboys will be screwed for 2008. source

Tony’s people are threatening to hold out, although that argument never seems to happen.

Anyway, as impossible as it would seem a year ago, Tony Romo is the shining star on the Cowboys uniforms and Terrell Owens is at peace.

Long live, Tony!
