What will the Lions look like this year?
An interesting story ran on FOX Sports earlier. The writer went into a bit of detail describing the difference that Mike Martz is starting to make with the Lions.
His style of coaching, his attention to detail, and his knowledge of the game are amazing, and he’s passing all that along to the players. After he was hired, there seemed to be a general feeling that the Lions would suddenly transform into a 10-6 playoff team.
But why should they? I’m a big fan of Mike Martz, but you can’t make something out of nothing. You have to have talent, hard working players, and time. He doesn’t really have much of any of those. Check out this quote by Roy Williams:
“There’s more coaching. He says 2 yards outside the number, he means 2 yards. Not a yard and a half,” said receiver Roy Williams, who led the team with eight touchdown catches last season. “That’s different that what I’m used to.”
The Lions in a nutshell.

I think that during his last three years in St. Louis, Martz more or less looked like an idiot. I’m surprised that anyone would hire him at this point, especially considering his health has been less than stellar.
But then again, this is the Lions we’re talking about.

I’d hire Martz in a heartbeat. Sure he wastes too many time outs, but he’s the O-coordinator now, so he won’t be doing that. You can’t deny he’s one of the greatest offensive minds in history, and the Lions have far underachieved on that side of the ball the last, oh, 40 years.
