Why do we love the Detroit Lions?
NFL Football at its best. NFL Football at its craziest.
Let me count the ways. Zero, uhh, well there is Zero. There aren’t any ways to love the Lions, we just do. Decade after decade it is the same thing. A hapless team, hapless manager, hapless owner, hapless hapless ha ahapless. Isn’t that a song or something?
From an interview with Neil Young:
Q. On one of your most poignant and best-loved songs, Helpless, you sing about a town in North Ontario which you keep returning to in your mind for comfort. I’ve always presumed you’re singing about the town in which you were born?
NEIL: “Well, it’s not literally a specific town so much as a feeling. Actually, it’s a couple of towns. Omemee, Ontario, is one of them. It’s where I first went to school and spent my ‘formative’ years. Actually I was born in Toronto… *I was born in Toronto*… God, that sounds like the first line of a Bruce Springsteen song (laughs). But Toronto is only seven miles from Omemee.” source
Look at this year, the Lions have a chance to do something. When my daughter was little, she used to say “Daddy, daddy, watch me do something”. Then she would have to think of something to do. This is exactly where the Lions are right now. They want to do something. They feel they are coming together and are close to being a halfway, almost good kind of team, which is a lot better than they have been.
Marinelli, Martz, Henderson, this is a really good coaching staff and the players are buying in. You can hear them, you can see them, unfortunately most of the time we just smell them and they stink. So, sure, there is a shortage of talent in a lot of places on this team, but the system is working and the players can tell.
You have to pay attention, though, because some surprises like Shaun Bodiford, Frank Davis, Ernie Sims, and Jon Kitna are emerging. Sure there is plenty to rant on with Detroit, but slowly some good things are happening.
Now the big question is will the Lions turn it around before it all implodes? My friends do not understand my optimism. We have seen a good defensive stand against the Seahawks and their formidable offense and a good offensive stand against the anemic Packers defense. Slowly they are putting it together.
Not withstanding Matt Millen at GM and Bill Ford Sr. at Owner, two of the Lions weakest positions, the Lions are building something here like a Phoenix rising out of the slime pit.
Don’t get me wrong. They probably won’t win much this year. It is constant improvement with maybe a bit of backsliding here and there that we are looking for. Players that want to play and want to play tough will see the field. Others will see the exit door.
NFL Football Fan Question Oh no, is the Squibster a Lions believer? Or is he just trying to get out of several previous lifetimes of bad karma?
