Aikman_Troy_04_168-961.jpgEvery sport at all different levels has a Hall of Fame. My favorites are the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame and the National Football League Hall of Fame. My love for the Hall started as a young boy, just reading about it and debating it with my Dad.

Harry CarsonOnce, on a special day, my Mom, yeah, my Mom, took me to the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Ok, Dad was there too. As we were strolling by the busts (that means statue heads, you know), my Mom stopped and laughed. “What is it, Mom?” “Oh nothing” Why is it always nothing with Moms when it is really something?

John Madden“Come on, Mom” “Well”, she said “That player sat behind me at IU and slept through all his classes and got A’s” :) Ahh, some things never change. If we can’t give preferential treatment to athletes (and then deny we did it), who can we give it to?

Rayfield WrightAnyway, as a boy your heroes are always larger than life. There are no recruiting scandals, contract holdouts, drug tests, etc. Each athlete seems to be better than just ordinary people, except maybe your Dad or Mom. It is not until you are older and jaded that you realize that they are just ordinary people with some extraordinary skills.

Warren MoonBut for one day each year, we can suspend our judgment and just be a hero worshiper again. We can forget all the negatives and just concentrate on the positives. Let’s face it, football players can’t be our role models, it is not their job or what they are good at, but they can be our sports heroes.

Reggie WhiteIf they are our sports heroes, then they can inspire us to set goals, and work hard at whatever we do. We can look at them as sports warriors and pretend we are just as good. Now that is fun. Now that is inspiring!

Fan Question Do you dream of being a Hall of Famer? What position would you play?
